Dealing with Emergencies After Dark

Dental mishaps don’t always follow the sun’s schedule; they can stir up trouble even under the moonlit Western sky. Here are some tips for you to keep in your back pocket in case of an emergency.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

When you’ve encountered unexpected territory, remember to stay calm. If a tooth decides to go for a tumble, the key is to locate it first. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If you manage to find the tooth, try slipping it back into its socket. If that’s a no-go, pop it into a glass of milk and holler for our pediatric dental experts pronto!

What should I do if my child chips or breaks a tooth?

Start by rinsing your child’s mouth with warm water and applying a cold compress to reduce swelling. If any pieces of the tooth were broken off, be sure to gather the fragments, wrap them in damp gauze, and hop in the saddle to see us as soon as possible.

What should I do if my child bites their tongue, lip, or cheek?

Gently clean the area with warm water and apply a cold compress for comfort. If bleeding is excessive or the pain persists, round ’em up and head on over to our dental studio or the nearest emergency room for urgent care.
